ROCK SLIDE CLOSES I-40 WEST OF ASHEVILLE
Wednesday, October 28, 2009

A rockslide on Interstate 40 in Western North Carolina October 25 will close the highway for several months, affecting traffic between Knoxille, Tennessee and Asheville, North Carolina. The slide occurred around mile marker 2.6, west of Asheville in Haywood County near the Tennessee border. Boulders, some as large as a house, helped create a 40-50 foot high pile of debris hundreds of feet long atop the highway.

A similar slide in the same area in 1977 closed I-40 from July through September. Both Asheville and Knoxville are unaffected by the blockage and are urging travelers and tourists to explore other routes to reach their cities.

For potential detours from your starting location, contact your local AAA Carolinas Branch Office.
