Welcome to Old Salem, the most authentic and comprehensive history attraction in the country. Find yourself in another time and place by discovering our four unique museums:
- The Historic Town of Salem
As one of the most authentic and inviting living history restorations in the United States, Old Salem invites you to find yourself in another time and place. As you stroll through the restored town, you can not only view the buildings and gardens as they were, but you can experience the daily life that took place inside, showing you history as the Moravians lived it.
- The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA)
The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) is the only museum dedicated to exhibiting and researching the regional decorative arts of the early South. With its 24 period rooms and six galleries, MESDA showcases the furniture, paintings, textiles, ceramics, silver, and other metalwares made and used in Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee through 1820.
- The Old Salem Toy Museum
The Old Salem Toy Museum houses an vast and exciting collection of antique toys spanning a wide range of time and place.
The Old Salem Toy Museum takes the space formerly used as The Gallery at Old Salem. This full-time Toy Museum exhibits the collections already held by Old Salem and the generous gifts made to the institution by Anne and Thomas Gray.
- The Old Salem Children's Museum
The Old Salem Children's Museum is a hands-on “fun space” designed especially for children ages 4-9, and for adults to play and learn along with their children. This children's museum is designed to encourage exploration and play as a pathway to learning about life long ago.
Along with a child’s size Miksch House, a secret tunnel, and a marble roll, The Old Salem Children's Museum features a two-story modern climbing sculpture by artist Tom Luckey. For more fun, children can have a profile drawn, try on costumes from long ago, build with "bricks," identify items from long ago by touch, and see what one might have looked like as a resident of Salem.
