Since its founding in 1902, the North Carolina Museum of History has been an exciting place to explore North Carolina history. The museum encourages visitors to discover the past; to reflect on their own lives and their place in history; and to preserve state, regional, and local history for future generations.

The Carolina Mountains: Photography of Margaret Morley

Around the turn of the 20th century, Margaret Morley traveled throughout western North Carolina recording scenes of everyday life. Her photographs and writing capture farm chores, women's work, one-room schoolhouses and other aspects of life in a bygone era. The exhibit features more than 50 of Morley's photographs, several of which appear in her 1913 book The Carolina Mountains.

History Through Costume Interpretation

Clothing can tell us much about the state's history. Follow this chronological exhibit and see how. The items range from a 1757 embroidered muslin cap to 1980s clothing.The gallery closes Feb. 25, 2007 and reopens Sunday, March 11, with another selection of clothes from the collection.

Mysteries of the Lost Colony and A New World

England's First View of America from the British Museum

Admission is $10 for adults
$8 for students, senior citizens, active military personnel and groups of 10 or more; $5 for children 5 to 12 and for youth groups ages 5 to 18;
free for children ages 4 and under.

Explore one of history’s most astonishing unsolved mysteries in the major exhibition Mysteries of the Lost Colony and A New World: England’s First View of America from the British Museum. The exhibition is presented through the collaboration of the N.C. Museum of History and the British Museum in London, England, and it will run through Jan. 13, 2008.
