SUZUKI SX4 SPORT SEDAN - $15,270
The four-door SX4 replaces the Aerio SX hatchback for 2008. The SX4 is modeled after the Suzuki Swift, a small sporty sedan that has won 16 international awards but has not been sold in the United States. With generous cargo and occupant space, the Japanese-built SX4 will appeal to younger buyers with fine handling, firm ride and low price. Horsepower drops by 12 from the Aerio and needs more punch for highway driving. Standard features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise control, heated side mirrors, keyless entry, tilt steering wheel and anti-lock brakes. A wedge shape and high belt-line provide an attractive profile. Inside, the look is modern, high-tech with a dashboard display readable in sunlight.
LIKES: Handling, space, looks.
DISLIKES: Low power, no armrest.
BOTTOM LINE: Compare with other sub-compacts. Price a plus.
TOYOTA HIGHLANDER LTD 4X4 SUV - $34,150
This is Toyota’s most popular SUV, introduced in 2001. This year the sevenseater received a major redesign, adding a more powerful V-6 engine, more technology to control handling and ride comfort, and more inside space. The Limited is the top of three trims. The chassis is four inches longer and three inches wider with an inch more ground clearance for those who choose a four-wheel drive version. The ride improves with 19-inch wheels; electronic steering, traction and brake assist systems and upgraded suspension. Cargo space grows 95 cubic feet and the second row’s middle seat slides fore and aft and can be used as a console or folded for third row access. Comfort was improved. Side mirrors are heated but limited in mobility. Neat touches include Optitron gauges, chrome door handles, puddle lamps, and rear spoiler.
LIKES: Handling, power, comfort, space.
DISLIKES: Range of side mirrors.
BOTTOM LINE: The second generation Highlander evolves attractively.
MERCURY SABLE PREMIUM FWD -$27,330
After 18 years, Mercury renamed the Sable the Montego in 2004. In 2008, the Sable name returns as a better-dressed version of its fraternal twin, the Ford Taurus. Sable received an exterior redesign, improved interior fit and finish, a quieter cabin with an improved suspension and noise-deadening materials, and a more powerful Duratec V-6 engine that boosts horsepower but slightly reduces gas mileage. Sable comes in either base or Premium, front or all-wheel drive. The transmission is a six-speed automatic, delivering power more quickly and smoothly. The ride feels upscale, especially with the optional electronic stability system. Features (some are options) include SIRIUS radio; rear sensing system; adjustable pedals; two-tone supple, perforated leather seats and a voice-activated Navigation system. Safety features are strong.
LIKES: Space, quiet, comfortable.
DISLIKES: Drop in gas mileage.
BOTTOM LINE: Sable returns, new and more powerful.
