Experienced Tips for Smooth Sailing

by Sarah Henshall

Cruise vacations are growing in popularity. More people are discovering the wonder of unpacking once and seeing a multitude of destinations. Here are some insider tips to maximize your cruise experience.

More Flexibility & Savings
Smooth SailingLet your travel agent know if you are flexible with your travel dates. Certain sail dates fill up sooner than others; by being flexible, you can still get the vacationv you want, at the best price in the market. AAA members may also receive exclusive benefits or savings.

Tell your travel agent if you are a senior citizen, in the military, or are a past passenger of the cruise line. Each is given special consideration for pricing.

Free Time for Mom & Dad
If you are traveling with children, be sure to find out about the details of the onboard youth programs. You may also want to ask your agent if the cruise line offers in-room babysitting. If they offer the service, make your request as soon as you board. Generally, the same babysitter will care for your child each night.

Less is More
When packing for a cruise, stage your outfits. I use the bathroom shower rod to display outfits as I’m packing. I usually start with eveningwear—the dress code is sometimes dictated by the cruise line—and work backwards. Most airlines have a baggage weight limit, so pack accordingly. Ask about your ship’s dress code.

Tipping
On the last night at sea, it is customary to offer gratuities to staff you feel have given exceptional service. Envelopes were handed out in the past, and passengers placed the amount of cash they thought was appropriate for the services. Today, policies vary by cruise line.

Your AAA travel agent can tell you the policy on your cruise. For example, some automatically charge an average gratuity of $10 per passenger per day to your onboard account. Should you want to challenge or change any amount, see the concierge.

Other lines believe tipping is personal and leave it up to you to decide. Some upscale cruise lines have adopted a “no tipping required” policy. One of the joys of cruising is the exceptional service onboard.

AAA travel agents are very well traveled; be sure to ask them for their favorite travel tips.
