Health insurance policies are normally sold by insurance agents and brokers.  Most people assume agents and brokers are the same, but there are important differences. 

An insurance agent is a salesperson that acts as a sales representative of one insurance company; thus representing that insurer.

Insurance brokers are also salespersons, but they represent more than one company and represent the policyholder/prospective insured/consumer.  Because a broker is able to sell products from different companies, they can work with several insurers to obtain the best coverage for the consumer’s needs at the best price. 

Some carriers offer insurance coverage directly to consumers with no agent/broker representation.  In most cases, there is no premium savings gained by dealing directly with the insurance carrier.  Since the rates are the same, many prefer the personalized service and experience of a broker or agent who is familiar with their needs.

When a change is necessary, a broker is better positioned to help because he has access to more carriers to shop for the best coverage.
