The Mt. Pleasant office of AAA Carolinas will host a free child passenger safety seat check and vehicle safety check as part of a Safe Driving Day Friday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 320-A West Coleman Blvd. in the Shoppes of Mt. Pleasant shopping center near Locklear’s Restaurant.
Appointments for a passenger seat safety check can be made by calling (843) 856-4607. No appointments is needed for the vehicle safety check, which includes examination of vehicle tires, windshield wipers, lights, belts, hoses, air filter and battery.
A written evaluation is provided and parents will be instructed on the proper installation of their child’s passenger safety seat.
South Carolina law requires children under 5 years old and weighing up to 80 pounds to be in some type of child restraint when riding in a car. Children between 20 pounds and 39 pounds need to be in a forward-facing child restraint with a three- or five-point harness. Children weighing between 40 pounds and 80 pounds need to be in a booster seat.
Booster seats help parents develop the safety habit in their children at an early age. This type of seat simply “boosts” the child in the back seat so the vehicle’s seat belt fits properly across the shoulder and hips. Teaching your child that buckling up is the right thing to do could be a lifesaver in years to come.
