The Power of the Magic

A friend of mine works with special needs children – she’s a saint – patient, kind and understanding. She helps kids with learning disabilities, ADD and other developmental issues, but one of her most endearing students is a young man we’ll call Tommy.

When Tommy was around three years old, his parents realized his language skills were not developing normally and took him to their pediatrician. The diagnosis was autism. Like some other individuals with severe-to-moderate autism, Tommy has trouble communicating, interacting with other people and expressing affection.

When Tommy was 10 years old, his parents wanted to take him and his brother and sister on a family vacation to Walt Disney World, but they were hesitant. One of Tommy’s autistic symptoms was the need for a strict routine, and he could be sensitive to loud noises. How would he react to all the stimulation that was to be found at Walt Disney World?

So, they did some research. They researched online and talked to their AAA Travel Professional. They found out that Disney is very accessible for people with disabilities, especially children. They could obtain a Guest Assistance Card that would allow them easy access to attractions through an un-crowded waiting area. They also discovered that many Walt Disney World Cast Members are trained to sensitively deal with guests’ disabilities, including autism.

So, they made a plan and organized the details of the trip so Tommy’s routine could be established as much as possible when they arrived. One of the tips they received was to bring along earplugs for Tommy to help dampen the noises that bothered him.

To their amazement, Tommy fell in love with Walt Disney World. His development advanced markedly during their visit. Tommy’s favorite activity was meeting Disney Characters. The first time he saw Goofy, his eyes lit up, he smiled and he opened his arms wide for a hug from the Goof.

My friend held back the tears at this point when telling Tommy’s story. Because, on this their first trip to Walt Disney World, Tommy’s parents saw their beautiful, autistic son willingly, joyfully even; hug someone – for the first time in his life.

Tommy is now preparing for his sixth trip to Walt Disney World. Tommy’s parents save their pennies so they can visit at least once per year. And, every time they visit, they watch in amazement as Tommy opens up to the “World” around him.

That’s the Power of the Magic.

 Walt's Words AAA Expert Tips

Interview of Walt Disney by George Kent
Appeared in The Family Circle magazine, 1938

“As far as I can see, being a celebrity has never helped me make a better picture or a good shot in a polo game or command the obedience of my daughter or impress my wife. It doesn’t even seem to help keep the fleas off our dogs, and if being a celebrity won’t even give you an advantage over a couple of fleas, then I guess there can’t be much in being a celebrity after all!”

Should I take advantage of Morning Extra Magic Hours?

Morning Extra Magic Hour allows you to enter a certain theme park at Walt Disney World® one hour early on certain days of the week. If you like to get up early, go for it. Getting to the park early means you can ride many of the most popular attractions before the park gets crowded for the day. But, the Extra Magic Hour park does get packed by 11am or so. Your best bet is to use Morning Extra Magic Hours to experience those popular attractions, then leave and visit another park or enjoy your resort. Remember, if you want to visit more than one park on the same day, you must add the Park Hopper® option to your Magic Your Way Theme Park tickets.
