Infiniti has created a second-generation G Coupe this year that matches a new 3.7-liter engine with a sleek, sporty design that demonstrates the Infiniti G37 is a serious competitor with the BMW 3 series, the Acura TL and Lexus ES 350. Built as an evolutionary vehicle on the G35 platform, the G37 comes as a basic Coupe, Coupe Journey with optional manual paddle shifters or Coupe Sport 6MT.
We drove the Journey, with the new 330-horsepower VQG37VHR engine that has been named one of the "Ten Best Engines" by Ward's Auto World magazine for 13 consecutive years. It comes with Variable Valve Event and Lift that uses hydraulics and electronic controls to enhance the efficiency and power of the engine, which redlines about 7,500 rpm, and instantly responds to acceleration requests with a satisfying engine growl. Razor-sharp steering renders curves moot and the suspension, lowered from the G35, includes a double-wishbone design in front and a multi-link suspension in the rear. The ride is firm but not jarring, even over road imperfections. Standard 18-inch or optional 19-inch Bridgestone high performance tires work well with several electronic brake aids, traction and vehicle dynamic controls. Rigidity in the platform increased 36% to aid in side impact crashes and despite it being a coupe, it only weights about 100 pounds less that the sedan. Coupe doors are longer by definition and the G37's feel longer than most, making it necessary to find wide parking spaces to avoid dinging other vehicles. The heavier door tends to want to close unless fully opened.
Inside, power seats allow comfortable positioning in front. Rear seats fold down to expand a shallow and smallish trunk and rear occupants over 6 feet tall will find headroom limited. An I-drive-like button on the dashboard controls and displays some audio, climate and trip monitoring functions. Washi-style aluminium trim, quality black plastic materials and Infiniti's signature dashboard-mounted analog clock create a pleasant and modern look. Outside, flowing fender curves with cats-eye headlamps, a raked windshield and a sweeping arc from hood to trunk provide a stunning appearance that elicits comments from observers.
Safety features are strong, including crushable front and rear safety zones. G37s come with a variety of optional packages, such as Sport, Navigation and Premium. All have a pocket key that unlocks the doors as you approach with a push of a door handle bottom. Push the button when you leave, and the doors locks. Convenient and addictive, it's a great feature. |
