BMW’s Z4 Roadster, introduced in 2003, undergoes a major evolution for 2007 with a new 3.0si model that replaces the original 3.0i and ramps up horsepower from 225 to 245 hp and torque from 214 lb.-ft. to 220 at lower rpms for greater grip at lower speeds. At the same time the new 3.0i replaces the old 2.5i model, still leaving a pair of Z4 two-seaters for roadster lovers to choose from.
Automatic and manual transmissions are options, along with options and packages. Our test 3.0is had a $2,750 premium package that included Bluetooth, automatically folding power soft-top and power seats with driver memory. Also added was a $1,200 sport package with 18-inch alloy wheels with run-flat performance tires and a sport suspension. Side bolstered and heated seats for $1,000; Zenon headlights for $700 and $475 for the Montego blue metallic paint job boosted the final price to $48,525 without destination charge.
Charging up mountains and around curves, drivers will exult in the handling and the smooth shifting of the short-throw six-speed manual that always powers up with a satisfying engine growl that turns onlooker’s heads and delights driver’s hearts. With its quickness, braking improvements induce driver confidence. Brake fade compensation automatically increases hydraulic pressure when brakes heat up; brake standby snugs brake pads against rotors when the driver lifts off the gas for quicker grip, brake drying occurs when rain sensors detect moisture and start-off assistance keeps the Z4 from rolling backward when stopped on a hill.
Strut-type front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension similar to what is used in BMW’s 3, 5, and 7 Series provide a firm ride and the sport suspension option gives proper road feedback. Twin-tube gas-pressure shock absorbers counter most road imperfections at highway speeds. The top automatically drops in 10 seconds and the 10-speaker, two subwoofer THX sound system with Carver amplifier is easily heard topless. Wind noise can be distracting with the top up. Built in Spartanburg, SC, the Z4 contains “smart” airbags that deploy according to occupant weight and severity of impact, including knee and side impact air bags. Cargo space is tight – maybe two duffel bags in the trunk and some small console space on the back wall between the drivers. Cupholders spring out from the upper corners of the dashboard. The information system gives average speed and miles per gallon.
