2006 Land Rover LR3 Adds Minor Touches
By Tom Crosby, AAA Carolinas

After redoing the Land Rover for 2005, the LR3 has won more than 20 automotive awards, making it last year’s most decorated sport utility vehicle. With that kind of success, changes for 2006 are minor: a choice for a smaller V-6 engine and standard third row seating in HSE models. Land Rover LR3 choices this year include the V-6 and the base SE or HSE, both of which come with a V-8 engine packed with 84 more horsepower than the V-6. Our test-drive, a permanent four-wheel drive HSE. included in its base price a touch-screen, voice-activated navigation system and an excellent-sounding audio network using a 550-watt, 14-speaker harman/kardon surround system. Buyers get what they pay for with the Land Rover - its quick (about 8.5 seconds 0 to 60 mph in the V-8 and 10.8 seconds in the V-6), capable (it was tested on five continents in temperatures ranging from 122 degrees to minus 104 degrees) and versatile (exceptional off-road capability for climbing hills, traversing deep and muddy puddles and descending steep grades). With 19-inch wheels riding on a four-corner independent self leveling air spring suspension, the LR3 vehicles all have Terrain Response, which has five different choices that automatically selects the proper electronic response for ride height, engine torque response, hill descent control, traction and transmission settings. This is the fifth all-new vehicle since Land Rover was launched 57 years ago, and the LR3 replaced the Discovery, which was 10 years old in 2004. Box-like in appearance, the LR3 is not a beauty-contest entrant outside, but inside, leather seating gives an upscale appearance. Strong ergonomic touches include stadium seating that allows each row to see over the one in front (driver visibility is superior), adjustable front seat arm rests, plenty of cupholders, grip handles on head restraints and map pockets in all four doors. The third row has special side storage bins and climate controls for the fold-flat seats. A pair of receding sunroofs have screen shades. Safety features are very strong; Land Rover lists more than two dozen safety items, including eight airbags for our seven seater, a patented integrated body-frame with side-impact protection and advanced lighting technology for nighttime entry, exit and parking. Interior design is clean with a plethora of dials, gauges and buttons for various functions. Road noise is average, worse at higher speeds. The navigation system requires some owner’s manual study, and the driver must reach for the screen to operate.
