Like a heavy-weight boxer thirsting for a rematch, Chevrolet has decided to once again pep up its lineup by expanding its Super Sport (SS) models to some of its best sellers, like the Impala, Trailblazer, Cobalt. Malibu and the Malibu Maxx, our five-seater hatchback test vehicle. Chevrolet has had SS models for nearly 50 years, but the strategy now is to offer the more powerful vehicles throughout a broader spectrum. The Malibu Maxx SS is for drivers who want to hear tires squeal now and then, experience the handling tingle of a sports car, yet still have the utility of a four-door hatchback. The front-wheel drive Malibus share some of their underbody with the Pontiac G6 and the 9-3 Saab. This year Chevrolet made some minor design changes outside, with the Maxx SS getting a platinum-look grille with a crosshatch pattern pierced in the middle with a gold Chevrolet Bowtie logo. The flat rear end remains relatively unchanged with the SS having a spoiler above a monochromatic rear and dual chrome exhausts - a hint that this hatchback might have some get up and go. The look won’t turn heads but the off-the line quickness will.
A low torque range provides power quickly to the 18-inch flangeless aluminum wheels that operate with a performance calibrated traction control system. The SS suspension uses stiffer front and rear springs with thicker front and rear stabilizer bars to reduce body lean while navigating tight curves. An overlarge leather-wrapped steering wheel allows plenty of room for the proper 8 o’clock/4 o’clock hand positions and has knobs on the wheel for manual shifts. The Malibu Maxx and SS offer more interior space than the Malibu with 6 inches more of wheelbase that helps generate six additional cubic feet for passengers. Rear seats slide fore and aft 7 inches, split 60/40 and for riding comfort, they also recline. Legroom exceeds 40 inches - spacious for a sedan or wagon. A rear glass skylight comes with a split/retractable shade. Further comfort for rear seat riders includes rear audio controls and headphones.
An armrest, easy to reach audio and climate controls, adjustable brake and gas pedals, and power cloth/leather trim seats with sport bolstering on the sides contribute to a nice cockpit. Plentiful rear cargo space incudes a power outlet and an easily movable cargo panel that can create two-tier storage space or be used as a table for tailgating. Safety features remain strong with four wheel anti-lock brakes, front head curtain and frontal/rear and side impact air bags, and three-point safety belts for all seating positions.
